We thought we were German for 150 years.
For generations, everyone in my family said the same thing: we’re German. Our surname, Gutenkauf, is literally a German word. My great-great-grandparents immigrated to America from Germany in the mid-1800s. It was never questioned.
Then a colleague suggested I look into a possible German citizenship claim. I started building a family tree and within a few weeks had 10 generations mapped out. That’s when things got interesting.
My 5th-generation grandfather was listed as born in Germany — but every single one of his family members was born in Luxembourg. I went back to primary sources and found his actual birth record registered in Luxembourg, not Germany. He had been mislabeled somewhere along the immigration chain, and that label stuck for 150 years.
That one record changed everything. Within a year, three generations of my family had Luxembourg passports.
Then I discovered my grandmother was born in Canada. Another citizenship. Another process to navigate from scratch.
